Human technology III · Perception · Design

Seeing the invisible behind the visible.

Perception, not information, is what shapes how we live. PreSensing is a method that trains the perceiving body of a designer, an architect or a leader, so that what is emerging can be sensed while it is still forming.

( a ) Where it comes from

The meeting of two of my own creations.

For 27 years I read culture from the outside, with Metatrends: archetypes, signals, matter, behaviour. Then Iogaia took me inside the body: breath, fascia, nervous system, attention. PreSensing is what happened when the two met. The reading of the world became inseparable from the state of the body doing the reading.

It is not a trend course and it is not a wellness programme. It is a training of perception for people who create the environments, objects and brands other people will live inside.

( b ) The ground

Four principles of clear perception.

Perception is a construction

Contemporary neuroscience describes perception as a controlled prediction, not a recording. What we call reality is the brain's best guess, corrected by the senses. Design happens inside that guess.

The interface, not the truth

Our senses did not evolve to show us the world as it is, but to show us what keeps us alive. We work with the interface consciously, instead of mistaking it for objectivity.

The body reads first

Interoception precedes interpretation. A room, a material or a market is felt before it is understood. Training that first read is what changes the quality of every decision after it.

Signals before trends

A trend is a signal that already became visible, and therefore already shared. PreSensing works one step earlier, where the advantage still exists.

( c ) The method

Three phases, one movement.

The clear perception method moves from the inside out and back again. Each phase has its own practices, its own field work and its own way of being measured.

“The body is our general medium for having a world.”

( d ) What changes

For the studio and for the boardroom.

Architects and designers

  • A personal criterion, so choices stop depending on references.
  • Projects that hold a feeling, not only an aesthetic.
  • Language to defend a decision in front of a client.
  • A way out of the cycle of copying what is already visible.

Founders and executives

  • Reading the direction of a category before the data confirms it.
  • Products and retail spaces that regulate rather than overstimulate.
  • A narrative rooted in perception, which competitors cannot copy.
  • Better decisions under noise, because attention is trained.
